Is a sudden shooting pain radiating from the right side of the back towards the head while straining extremely hard and working out a serious concern?
I was just working out and straining extremely hard doing front squats. A pain shot up the right side of my back and head. The back pain went away immediately after stopping the movement. I was able to finish the rest of the workout but a light headache lingered and subsequently subsided. There's now a general feeling of "tightness" on the right side of my head and neck. I was wondering if the possibility of an aneurysm is great enough to go to the ER or if this is most likely due to a muscle strain and/or exertion headache from dehydration.
Unlikely to be brain aneurysm related
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
Risk factors for having developed a brain aneurysms include cigarette smoking, conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, chronic hypertension, family history of cerebral aneurysms and polycystic kidney disease.
Unless the aneurysm gets ruptured or its too large to compress upon neighboring structures then its unlikely to produce any symptoms.
Based on your description, its most likely musculoskeletal pain. Oral naproxen or ibuprofen along with muscle relaxant like tizanidine can be advised in this regard.
Its unlikely to be an aneurysm based on the history. But if you are anxious and worried then there is no harm in getting yourself checked out in the nearest ER.
Wishing you best of health
