Question: Hi. My son is 4 years old and very healthy and active. This morning I have noticed a very small movable lump behind his right ear. There is no lump behind his left ear. Could this be a swollen lymph node?

Brief Answer:
Node

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.

Yes, I agree, it is a swollen lymph node. As long as it remains moveable and non painful, there is nothing to worry about and nothing to do.
If at any point it becomes painful, this could mean that the node itself became infected and may need to be tested with antibiotics. If this happens, I recommend consulting with your doctor.
Otherwise, there is no cause for concern.

Thank-you for your quick response. You have eased my mind. I will keep my eye on it over the coming weeks and go to the doctor if necessary.

Hi. Sorry for another question. My son has since developed a throat infection/virus similar to one that my daughter had last week. He has been sick since yesterday morning. Now the lymph nodes on both sides behind his ears feel swollen. Could this virus be the cause of the original swollen node and newly swollen node and if so how long will they take to go down once he is better.

Thank-you again

Detailed Answer:
Yes. These can definitely be in response to the virus. After the illness resolves, it can take weeks for the nodes to shrink.
