Is A Platelet Count Of 85 In An Elderly Man A Concern?
Question: Hi Doctor- my father is 80 years old and ref. to CBC done - his platelet count is 85 currently. he is also on medication for emphysema and related fro last 12 years and is immobile. Is it a cause of concern or normal medication/ therapy can improve the levels.

Based on your query and attached report, my opinion is as follows:
1. Even though hemoglobin appears normal, the low rbc count and increased MCV suggests Macrocytic anemia.
2. This along with low platelet count suggests an early sign of low Vit B12 and folic acid deficiency.
3. Vit B12 and folic acid supplements are essential. If not, pancytopenia could happen in future.
4. For patients with lung diseases, hemoglobin is usually expected to be high, and hence should be around 16g% to be called normal.
Now, starting on nutritional supplements as suggested above on daily basis should improve the blood cell values within two months. At present, values are near normal, not much to worry. Repeat tests after two months of treatment.
