Question: is a general surgeon qualified to do a bariatrics surgery? If you had a patient that had a history of smoking and illicit drugs wouldn't it be good preoperative planning to screen this patient before surgery.

Brief Answer:
Qualified to do provided trained for the same, thorough planning mandatory.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

* A general surgeon is qualified to do a bariatric surgery provided he or she has spent additional time training with established surgeons for bariatric surgery participated in a bariatric surgery fellowship board certified through a board of obesity.

* Any patient who has no history than weight gain or has a history of smoking and illicit drugs, it is the standard surgical protocol for preoperative screening of all the relevant systems so far as surgery as well as anesthesia point of view is concerned.

* In the latter case, it requires more detailed work up with additional measures to be considered in terms of pre-operative and post-operative care.
