Question: Hi Team , Please transfer this query to Experienced Gynecologist .

On 24/4/2017 - We had third scan and she is currently in 19th week of pregnancy and we tool Anomoly Scan today and the Radiologist said she did not notice one Kidney of the baby in the scan report and she wanted to us to take MRI Scan on the baby so she can see everything to confirm if all the organs are fine . I Have attached all the three different scans taken from Initial checkup . Please check and reply back if you want us to go with the preganancy .

What are the PROS and CONS of having baby with one Kidney . After we take the MRI scan we would know if the Kidney is available or not . For now the Radiologist said other organs are absolutely fine expect this .

Today we will be heading to FETAL MRI SCAN to FETAL Kidneys and Other Organs.
I will upload the picture once I get the report.

Please let me know if you want to us recheck on other ANOMOLY SCAN orelse go for MRI SCAN .

Brief Answer:
Please go for MRI

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Please go for MRI to confirm absence of one kidney.
Most. babies born with one kidney absent go on to live a normal healthy life.
Only in a small percentage, absence of kidney is associated with other severe abnormalities.
The anomaly scan and other previous reports do not point to it.
You have refused amniocentesis which would have further shown any such anomaly if it exists.
Chances of having a severely abnormal baby are remote, and with all risk calculation , you can go ahead with the pregnancy.
However get the MRI done first and let me know the report.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care

Thank you for your response .

Firstly , We went to fetal MRI SCAN and I have attached the doctor prescription post MRI scan and also MRI SCAN Report . Even they could not identify the Kidney .
When I had conversation with my Doctor Post MRI scan , They said there is a small part i.e. where kidney was formed and the Left Kidney went up and it is working good however there are uncertain if the right kidney was formed orelse was it not formed . They say they can see a Tissue near the right kidney place however cannot come to the conclusion what body part it is . They still not accurate if Right Kidney is missing or what that tissue is ..

Could you please provide more detailed answer for below queries .
What will MRI SCAN Report Give :
Will MRI SCAN gives the picture of organs orelse even the functionality of the organs if they are in working accurately :
Do you recommend any other scan in next 5-10 weeks to confirm about this Tissue :
How do we know if there is any problem to other organs bcos of missing Kidney and in which month we will be knowing :
Doctor said other organs are good for now and will there be possibility of other organs not functioning well later stages of pregnancy :
Are they any Anomalies :
How do we if Urine is Forming :

WHat do you mean by "You have refused amniocentesis which would have further shown any such anomaly if it exists. " We never Refused anything ...!!

Brief Answer:
As below

Detailed Answer:
Let me explain in detail.
1. MRI scan gives the picture or presence or absence of organs, not regarding functionality. In general, if no abnormality is seen in the structure of organs, they are presumed to be working normally.
However, MRI cannot comment precisely on the functioning of an organ, only the structure and presence / absence of it.
2. MRI is recommended after 4 weeks to see if the other ? mass that is seen is an ectopic kidney ( kidney but not present in the normal location, again, the MRI would only locate it, not comment on the functioning ).
3. There is no problem in other organs, because they are all present.
4. Anomalies are not present as seen in the scan. However, ultrasound and MRI will not detect ALL anomalies, that is a disclaimer written below every scan. You should understand that some anomalies are seen / detected only after a child is born or reaches a particular age.
5. Urine is forming, because there is normal amount of liquor ( fluid surrounding the baby ) , which is an indirect indicator of the functioning fetal kidneys.
Regarding what you have refused, please refer to the scan done on 11.3. 17, and see the paragraph on risk assessment and comment.
It is clearly written that all abnormalities cannot be seen on ultrasound alone. Further invasive testing only can establish that. After counselling, parents have opted against it.
Please go through that part.
Feel free to get back for further discussion.
Prayers always.
