Is A Fasting Blood Sugar Level Of 89 In An Obese Person With PCOD Normal?

Posted on Thu, 11 Jun 2015
Question: My daughter is obese and having POCD. In a recent test her fasting sugar level is 89 but serum insulin is 6.9. This was fasting value. Is there a reason to worry. Does she require any additional tests or medication

Brief Answer:
Restoration of healthy weight/weight loss is the key

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.Thanks for your query.

Early PCOS subsides once the weight is restored to nomal. As per your description I am glad that her glucose and insulin are within normal limits.I would recommend-
Start exercising(walking etc) or join a fitness center and loose weight gradually(not more than 10% in 6 months).
Healthy weight is key and it has to be restored for prevention/progression of PCOS.
I would also recommend prescription meds(metformin) depending on examination, scan reports (if required).
No need to do any other investigations.
Good luck!

Brief Answer:
Insulin levels are normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.

Thanks for your quick revert.
Fasting Insulin levels < 25 mIU/L or < 174 pmol/L(units are different mIU & pmol/L) are normal. So levels are normal.I would also suggest to check whether the value mentioned is within the reference range of your lab report. they are Nothing to worry.
