Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
I want to do HIV PCR RNA\DNA test ASAP. Can I do it after 7 days of exposure and can I believe in the result ?
Also I am planning to do the same test after 14 days of exposure and Antibody test in 4 and 12 weeks after exposure.

Brief Answer:
PCR after 3weeks alone is sufficient!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Doing a PCR at this time would not be able to provide conclusive evidence about this exposure barely 7days after. It is recommended to go at least 2weeks and three weeks is ideal and sufficient to conclude on this. Repeated testing is not very much needed but you can do so at your own discretion.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Hello Doctor,
The reason for confusion is,In Google it is mentioned this test can be taken 10 or 9-11days after the exposure. You have mentioned 2 Weeks after.

Currently I am in Japan and they also mentioned that test can be done 11 days after exposure.

My concern now is if I do test after 10 days,it will not be sufficient to identify the problem ? Should I wait min 2 weeks for this test?

At the same time I will be doing other tests at 4 weeks and 12 weeks period as well.

Brief Answer:
10days is too early, though possible!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is possible to do so after 10days but the results wouldn’t be conclusive to me as a physician. I ask my clients to do this test only after a minimum of two weeks to make sure there is nothing that can be missed. If you really want to do it after 10 or 11days, you may.

Many tests do not change the results. I prefer a one time good testing than many at several different periods.

I hope this helps. I wish you well.

Thanks for the clarification Doctor.I had sex with Sex Worker (Safe sex only-used Condom).

Before sex I was touching her private part(Index finger) and I did not insert the finger.I was just caressing for 15-20 seconds and as far as I remember there was no fluid from her private part.

The problem is I had PEELED/BROKEN skin due to cold weather with paper cut in my middle finger. Is there any possibility for HIV transmission if my Middle finger had touched her Vaginal fluid unknowingly? There was no much sensible fluid.

After coming back home I washed my hands,at that time in my middle finger there was small bleeding (But only after washing hands with lotion, not before that and blood amount not even equal to one drop).

Is there any possibility for HIV transmission in above case?

Lets assume little blood is leaked and it touched vaginal fluid (In worst case I am considering this, there was no noticeable bleeding)

Brief Answer:
The risk is minimal!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The risk is minimal from all the surrounding circumstances and conditions that you have reported. Though HIV is transmissible, it doesn’t happen that easily.

I wish you well and keep me posted immediately once you get the first results.

Kind Regards

Hello Doctor,
Thanks for the reply and one final question.

If there was no blood from the Paper cut when I was touching her Private part,Shall we conclude that there is NO possibility at all for transmission ?

Brief Answer:
Difficult to say NO possibility!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It is difficult to say no possibility at all. This is because there is always a risk no matter how small it is in such encounters. This is why I say it is very very minimal but we cannot completely role that out.

I wish you well.
