Question: I am 44 years old and have started gymming from 1st XXXXXXX Am taking protein su.pplements for the past one month. Now I want to take a protein supplement which also has a small amt of creatine in it. I am taking one tab each of cholestrol conrol 10mg, 1 tab of uric acid control 300mg and 1 tab blood thinner. My blood reports one month back were all normal. I asked my doctor if can now stop taking the tabs but he said I can just continue with them since I have been doing it for a couple of years now and there are no side effects. last year I weighed 93 kgs. With some months of exercise at home I reduced to 83 kgs and since joining the gym I have reduced to 79 kgs. I am interested in body building hence the protein and creatine supplement. Please advise if it is ok for me to take protein and creatine supplement ?

Brief Answer: Protein supplements increase uric acid levels Detailed Answer: Hi.Thanks for writing on HCM. I am glad that you a wonderful fitness regime and wish you will continue the same but with slightly altering it to exercises which do not involve muscle building for two reasons: 1. Protein supplements(with or without creatine) increase uric acid levels (end product of protein metabolism) leading to deposition in joints and muscles. When they go further up it may result in kidney stones etc.Since you have been taking uric acid lowering drugs I would not recommend to avoid those which alter uric acid levels. 2. Since muscle building exercises require adequate protein in the absence of which they undergo atrophy or become flabby. I were to advise to continue the medication for cholesterol and uric acid lowering. You can reconsider protein supplements only after your treating doctors permission. He/she should accordingly make adequate changes to your treatment. Hope I am clear. Let me know if you need clarifications. Stay healthy and All the best.

As mentioned earlier I did my blood test last month and everything was normal. I did pose the same question to my doctor that I want to build muscles and hence can I take protein supplements and he replied in the positive. My question now is can I take a protein supplement with a small amount of creatine in it ? And according to your answer I should avoid protein supplements, then how do I build muscles?

Brief Answer: Activity must match protein intake Detailed Answer: As long as blood tests for uric acid are within normal limits there might not be any problem.Remember these are maintained due to the medication which lower uric acid levels. They might go up in the future which might necessitate increased dose of the medication currently used. As a precaution I were to suggest to take protein supplements in moderate amounts & do a mininimal to moderate muscle building activity.Striking a balance is important.Rest can be compensated by other activities which doesn't predominantly involve muscle hypertrophy.
