Is Primrose Oil Effective In Treating PCOS?

Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, Dr XXXXXXX My name is XXXXXXX from Spain. I have 25 years and have been trying to fix my polycystic ovarian syndrome using Primrose oil during 4 days now. My gynecologyst recommend me in summer to take the pill XXXXXXX in order to stop the almost continuous bleeding I've been having since XXXXXXX (it is like having an almost neverending period). About 1 year ago, everything was okay, my periods lasted 7 days although I could get them every 1 month and half (with a little of delay). Suddenly, the summer of 2013 my period started and I had it practically during entirely the summer months (june, july and august). By that time I tried to cure this problem using Primrose Oil but, as this natural medicine didn't worked, finally I had to take the pill in september coz the gynecologist recommended me in order to stop the bleeding and balance my ovaries. I was taking XXXXXXX since then till XXXXXXX 2014 (more than 6 months) and I stopped in order to check is everything was normal again. However, since I dropped the pill the same thing has been occuring me: I bleed almost every day and it's almost an ilusion the few 3-4 days I don't spot. I am not likely to take the pill again coz the side effects it has and also coz I've rised by parents that are in love with natural medicine. However, sometimes this kind of alternative way to cure is very slow ;< Since this summer I've been having in mind to give a second chance to Primrose Oil and I started with it again however I been noticing that the amount of blood I bleed is higher. I would like to know your opinion coz it is diffucult to talk about this with doctors here in Spain. Everything is resolved with the pill but I developed a fibroadenoma in my right boob during the time I was on the pill, so now that the gynecologyst want to put me on it again I'm more reacious.
I'm sorry for this long text but it is that I've doing some reasearch and I've discoverd that there's women that had overcome the ovarian polycystic syndrome with a vegan diet, raw food diet or another diets that are not to extreme but that don't involve the pill.
Please, if you give the time to read this, send me your thoughts on it. But it would be great if you could watch this 2 videos:

I feel very worry with this situation and I would love to have a normal reproductive system. I don't undestand why this bleeding is happening, my hormons seem to be ok in the test my gynecologyst ask me to do, I'm on a good weight don't have diabetes neither cholesterol ;a
And I would like to have babies easily in the future, that is other reason why I don't like the idea of taking the pill and just masking the deeper inbalance that may be.
This is really long, so I understand you don't answer me.
In any case, thank you for your attention

Brief Answer:
Make the right choice

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query.

I understand your concern and I will try to help to do the right choice.

As my opinion and as I have understood from your history, if I was your treating doctor you can't continue with the use of the PRIMOSE oil because you are having more bleeding and you can be anemic.

If bleeding is stopped by the use of oral contraception, you have to continue with oral contraception, prescribed by your doctor.
They have side effects but for you is better to use them.

And don't worry for the case of being mother in the future, because women with PCOS and use oral contraceptive have bigger chances to get pregnancy after they stop using them.

When you decide to become a mother you can consult with your doctor because they will help you, by giving you good advice.

All the best
