Is MMR Vaccine Safe For A Toddler?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

This is XXXX again, my 15 months old baby's MMR Vaccine is due on next week.
Now I am getting very mixed reviews about this Vaccine!! I am also reading some articles when it is saying that Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Vaccine is a Potential Cause of Encephalitis (Brain Inflammation) in Children. Some other saying MMR can cause autism or might effect hearing ability for a baby.

My local doctor said MMR is safe and when they are also being given in countries like USA and Europe why we need to bother !!! But when something is being discussed about , I personally feel there should be some reason behind it.

Wanted to know your opinion on the same...
Is this Vaccine that important?

Also please let me know if we can give this Vaccine when my baby is 5 years old instead of now (instead of now)? I am bit finicky about injecting live viruses to my baby.

Thanks and Regards
XXXX

Brief Answer:
MMR vaccine is a very safe vaccine

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking the query

I want to assure you that MMR is a very safe vaccine.
Although in very rare condition it may cause some complications but there are very few research articles about the direct causal relationship between MMR vaccine and autism or brain complications.None of the recent research articles have shows any relation between MMR and autism/encephlitis.
MMR vaccination can cause fever and that can be treated well with paracetamol.
There are always some pros and cons of every medication and vaccination but that does not mean that we should not use them.
MMR vaccine provides protection against measles, mumps and rubella.
You can imagine, how important and safe this vaccination is, so that it has been included in national immunisation programme in almost every country of this world.
All these three diseases have dreaded complications and if there is an opportunity to avoid them with just two injections why to refuse that.
I am sorry to say but there are so many unreliable informations available on the Internet. Don't go behind them.If you really want to get some knowledge always read recommendations/guidelines of XXXXXXX academy of pediatrics(IAP) or articles of PUBMED.
Considering the importance of MMR like in other European countries, IAP has recently changed the guidelines and according to that there is no need of single measles vaccination at 9 months of age but instead of that MMR should be given.
Now the second dose is recommended in second year of life anytime after 4-8 weeks of first dose instead of earlier recommendation at 4-5 years of age.
I think I have made it a little lengthy.
In brief don't hesitate and go straight forward for the MMR vaccination.

I hope now you are convinced regarding the vaccination.
Still if you have any query I shall be glad to answer.
Regards

Thanks a lot doctor for your detailed explanation.

Can you please let me know
1) If we can give her the first dose of MMR when she is 5 years ?
2) Can we give her 3 separate vaccines for Measles-Mumps-Rubella instead of one single dose of MMR.. sorry for my ignorance.. just wanted to know if that is possible?

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
I won't suggest you to delay the vaccination

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for follow up.
First of all I want to tell you that don't hesitate in asking anything. You are in my regular follow up and it's my duty to solve all your doubts.Infact I would be happy to help you out.
I want to know why you are so much worried regarding this MMR vaccination.
If you have gone through the IAP immunisation guidebook 2013-2014 it is clearly mentioned there in page number 229 that there is no causal relationship between autism or other complications.
The vaccine schedule has been made after studying the age group affected by a particular disease.
I have already mentioned that IAP has decreases the age for first dose vaccination from 15 months to 9 months.Even the second dose should be given before completion of 2 years.
So I won't suggest you to delay the MMR vaccination.

Now coming to your second query.
You can give all these three vaccination seperately. But there is availability issue.Other thing is that if there is no advantage over combination vaccination why to prick the baby three times.

I think you have some doubts in your mind and you are hesitating to ask.

Please feel free and ask anything.I shall be glad to answer.

Regards
