Posted on Thu, 12 May 2016
Question: I have a 28 year old grandson who has depression and has been prescribed Lexapro. At this time he has lost interest in everything. He is wanting to get on with treatment and counselling so that he can get back to his sky diving, which he has enjoyed in the past. He is concerned that he may not be able to do this while he is taking Lexapro

Brief Answer:
lexapro will help, he can enjoy sky diving even with lexapro

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern for your son.

Lexapro (Escitalopram) is an SSRI group of anti depressant drug. It is generally a very safe drug and more used in young people with depression. It is tolerated well by more than 90% of the patients. Common side effects are headache, nausea, sexual problem and sleep disturbance. Normally person gets adapted to these side effects if at all they are there. All of them are reversible even if they persist.

In his case after improvement in depression he can go for sky diving even if he is taking lexapro. Just inform this thing to his treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

Brief Answer:
yes after initial stability

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up.

Lexapro does not cause significant sedation. In 2-4% of the patients it can cause some dizziness or sleepiness. After taking lexapro for one week if he does not have any side effect like this, he can drive the truck without any issue related to lexapro.

Take care.
