Is INR Value Of 1.2 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Sep 2017
Question: I have a higher than normal PT of 15.7, yet an INR of 1.2 I always thought the INR went up with the PT
I am on coumadine - the young np on call has me on double coumadin for three days and 60mg of enoxaparin 60mg twice daily for three days - I am confused why the PT is higher and if this is normal treatment - FYI I had an LVAD put in 8 weeks ago and doing very well - do not want to complicate this with excessive bleeding. Hate to go behind the np and check with the doctors on the team over the weekend....I have a heartmate 3 which is great! The INR has been low a few times and it was rechecked and I was given only one extra dose of the coumadin but I have never had the enoxaparin or double coumadin prescribed before - I am careful with my diet and Vit. K etc.

Brief Answer:
INR is a function of PT!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

INR is calculated by dividing PT of patient with the known standard PT values. Therefore, INR directly measures how many times above the normal is the PT of the patient. If you were to divide your PT by the normal value, you should have 1.2. You could also upload the results sheet for me to review and tell whether the value of 15.2 corresponds to 1.2.

You could check this yourself: your PT/Normal PT.

Let me know if this addresses your concern. I wish you well and feel free to follow up with me if need be.

are you saying that my current INR DOES correspond with the PT? as documented of 15.2?
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is normal!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Normal PT are 13.5. The corresponding INR would be 15.7/13.5 = 1.2.

Your value of 1.2 corresponds to the PT of 15.7.

I wish you well.
