Is GFR Level Of 41.76 Normal While Having CKD?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Jan 2016
Question: Dear doctor,
I have a friend, a 35 years old lady, in China with Chronic kidney disease (CKD).She is on the 3 stage now (GFR level is 41.76). She received treatment in China for about 5 years. However, the illness is still getting worse. The doctor in China told her that there is no pretty good method to make her fully recovered. It is even hard to stop the worsening.
I want to ask that is there any methods in the U.S. to treat the disease better. What’s the most advanced technique in XXXXXXX to treat CKD. She told me if she can get better treatment in the U.S., she will come here to get treatment.
Moreover, she learned that there are some new researches about treatment by using stem cells to cultivate kidney. Is this possible to be used for treatment now in America?
Finally, I want to know what the best medicine in XXXXXXX for treatment?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Kidney transplant is the best treatment available

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I understand the situation of your friend. The kidneys filter the blood such that the toxic materials get filtered out while the remaining gets circulated. In chronic kidney disease (CKD) this process is damaged. No medicine can make up for this filtration. Stem cells will not help in growing the filtering system back again. Hemodialyis can use an external membrane for the filtration but in that case this process would need to be repeated quite frequently. It is like using an external artificial kidney. The other alternative is to go for a kidney transplant but that will require a donor, the availability of which is limited and after signing up she might need to stand in a long queue. This is the best treatment for CKD available not only in XXXXXXX but all around till date.

As of now your friend does not need a kidney transplant but medicines would not really help.
