Is Duphaston Safe To Take While Planning For Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
I'm 26 year old married female. Myself and my hubby planning to get into a family way from the past 3 months. When we consulted a gyno, she advised me to take folic acid tablets daily in the morning and duphaston from my day 15 to day 24. I'm taking Folic acid tablets now and I thought to take second opinion for taking duphaston, since i have seen so many pros and cons of it all over internet. Please clarify me the actual purpose of duphaston and its side effects if any.

Thanks in Advance.

Brief Answer:
Duphastan use not recommended by ACOG guidelines preconceptionally.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
thanks for the query to hcm for an opinion,
As you are planning for pregnancy , it has been correctly advised to start folic acid tabs ideally from 3 months prior from date of planned conception in order to prevent any congenital anomalies in the child which are commonly seen due to folate deficiency.
However duphastan tabs are progesterones which are actually known to support pregnancy after it has arrived and in no way helps in getting pregnant. If your serum progesterones levels are normal and you have not been experiencing any inter-menstrual bleeding or irregularity of menses, it indicates that you don't suffer from any such deficiency and hence progesterone supplementation is actually not required. It is practiced empirically by some practitioners that if the woman conceives and develops luteal phase defect or deficiency then she may experience a threatened miscarriage, so in order to avoid such incident anyhow, they prefer prescribing these hormonal support during each cycle when the couple is trying for a child.
In a way it is not harmful, but from guidelines point of view, it is not recommended.
I hope i have answered your query in detail,
Wishing you good health,
Regards
