Is Clindamycin Effective In Treating Respiratory Infection?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: I am a retired veterinarian and currently have a bad respiratory infection. I suspect it was viral but that a good old bacteria got involved like S pneumococcus. I have Clindamycin at my home which I have used to treat my dog. It is 150 mg. What dose would I use for me? I know I should go see a doctor, but I am just stubborn and feel I can get this under control.

Brief Answer:
Can take 150 mg every 6 hours...but make sure it's really bacterial....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are going through.

It is common for viral infection of upper respiratory tract to get complicated with bacterial infection. Clindamycin is not commonly prescribed. Instead, broad-spectrum penicillins like Augmentin or Ampicillin are recommended first. Sometimes, macrolides like Azythromycin (Z-pack) is also of help before deciding for Clindamycin (which is the last choice).

Anyway, you made your own choice (which I do not agree). Clindamycin can be taken 150 mg, every 6 hours as I do not think yours is a severe bacterial infection.

Next, apart antibiotic, you should treat your other symptoms too like:
- coughing with antihistaminic and mucolytic
- oral hygiene with oral spray
- nasal decongestant
- anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen
- vit.C and B complex to increase immune force
- chicken soup broth and increase fluids intake

Wish fast recovery.
