Is Catapres Effective In Treatment Of Hypertension?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Sep 2016
Question: I have had hypertension for sometime. I have been traveling and didn't keep up with my meds.

I took my own BP and found it shockingly high 200/ 115

I went to hospital explained everything, She gave me Catapres , It knocked it down very effectivly , But she was would not give me a script for more. Is catapres a high risk medication?

I am working in a stressful job 12 hour night shift, I have the opportunity to get an other job , that is much less stressful , However I will not pass the required medical examination if I do not have a lower BP reading. I would like to be able to get a script for Catapres , That worked so effectively yesterday. Is there any possibility to get a script for a few doses of Catapres on line ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that Catapres can be given for chronic treatment of hypertension, as well as in hypertensive crisis.

But, as an ER doctor, she is only allowed to give you medication in the ER. She is not allowed to prescribe medication for chronic treatment of hypertension as you should take the prescription from your family doctor or personal cardiologist.

So, it is not about Catapress, but it is all about the doctor who should prescribe the drug.

Catapres can be given as immediate release tablets 0.1 mg. You can take it 0.1-0.2 mg/day q12hr up to the maximal total dose of 2.4mg daily.
You can find it as a transdermal patch too.: apply 1 patch every 7 days; start with 0.1 mg; increase by 0.1 mg after every 1-2 week interval; usual dose range is 0.1-0.3 mg every Week.

It is not such effective as Irbesartan for the chronic management of blood pressure. It has a short time of action compared to Irbesartan, which can help you have a better control of your blood pressure through the day.

You should discuss with your attending physician on the above issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
