Is Carditone Advisable For BP Before Knee Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 May 2016
Question: My husband takes carditone to regulate his blood pressure. He is going in for knee surgery and the doctor told him to stop taking any supplements 7 days prior. My concern is that his blood pressure will go up. Is there any danger continuing carditone. They said if he is on blood pressure meds that he can continue taking that but the don't know anything about carditone so they want him to discontinue. Is there any reason that he should discontinue. I'm concerned his blood pressure will go up.

Brief Answer:
small short term increase of blood pressure does not cause immediate harm

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks or using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned but once he is allowed to continue taking his other BP medications then he should be ok.

Carditone is typically used to help maintain blood pressures that are within normal range though some persons use it to lower blood pressure. It is the herbal form of the blood pressure medication reserpine.

One of the issues that the doctors may have would be the fact that since it is herbal and not required to the thoroughly investigated like his traditional medications, they may not be totally aware of possible side effects that it may have on his surgical outcome.

IF they do not know all of the potential effects of it then they would not know what to look out for which would be dangerous.

All medications, traditional or herbal , have potential benefits and side effects. If they do not know all of either about the carditone then they would not know what the herb could possible cause.
All the variables going into surgery need to be clearly known.

Even if the BP goes up slightly, they can adjust his other meds. A temporary rise in blood pressure unless it sky rockets to very high values, does not usually cause immediate danger.

Most of the complications of high blood pressure are due to long standing uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Moderately high readings for a few days , would not likely cause long term consequences.

In addition, during surgery, the blood pressure is monitored and medication is given if it goes above what they want.
He should be ok.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
