Is Betnesol Injection Advisable For Development Of Lungs In Foetus?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: My wife is 33 weeks pregnant with twins (separate sacs)
EDD is Dec 29, 2014
There are no signs of pre-term labor. Doctor has advised 2 doses of betnesol injection (12 mg 24 hours apart) to help with development of the babies lungs.
We are not keen on giving steroids if there seems no need.

Pls advise on the same (benefits, risks as well as side effects) since we seem to be on course to deliver in week 37.

Thanks & Regards
XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Better to take betnesol

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

In twin pregnancy due to overdistension of the abdomen, there is greater chance of early rupture of membrane and preterm labour.. Lung maturity occurs by 34-35 weeks..

So in my opinion, it would be better to take 2 doses of betnesol injection to enhance fetal lung maturity.. So even if delivery occurs prior to 37 weeks, babies wont be affected much.. Side effects are less and advantage is more.. Is she diabetic.. Only problem seen associated with it is sudden increase in sugar level following injection..

Hope i have answered your query..Feel free to ask any doubts.. Good day..
