Is Apixaban 5mg BD Safe After ORIF Of The Tibia?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Nov 2017
Question: I recently have had an ORIF of tibia and fib after a fall. I was put on dabigatran (in Mexico where I had my accident) and at home in the uk have been put onto apixaban 5mg bd. I'm terrified of it . What if I fall ? What if I bleed and there's nothing to reverse it ?
Then last night I had a bath which may have been too hot , and when I got out with help from my husband I fainted ! Dropped my systolic bp. I was sick and thought I had a PE or something . I'm really scared

In addition my accident was 3 weeks ago .
Also how will they get me off this drug will it be weaned ?

Brief Answer:
THe benefits of taking this drug out weights any side effects!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

After an ORIF procedure, being on a blood thinner is really not an option but a must. We have enough products to address any bleeding should it occur. However, that is very unlikely as this is a controlled intervention.

Hot baths cause excessive sweating and fluid loss. That will closely mimic heat exhaustion like working excessively in hot climate. Kindly refrain from that as it leads to fluid loss, drop in blood pressure, decrease blood flow to the brain with symptoms of dizziness, fainting, vertigo, etc. In such events, drink as much water as possible.

I hope this helps and guides. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Brief Answer:
No!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is a controlled process. Bleeding in the brain would be a very rare and uncommon side effect. In all, the benefits outweigh any potential consequences.

I hope this helps. I wish you well.
