Is Amoxicillin Advisable For Syphilis?
Question: I believe I have syphilis. I had a blood test on Friday but haven't gotten the results. Will it help to take a antibiotic like amoxicillin? I have some that my brother keeps around for urinary track infections. I know penicillin is the correct one but I won't be able to get any until Monday at the earliest.
Brief Answer:
Amoxicillin is not recommended
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank You for trusting HealthcareMagic
Oral amoxicillin is not recommended for treatment of syphilis.
Injectable penicillin is the treatment of choice. Taking amoxicillin can put you at risk for developing antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, thereby making treatment of syphilis very difficult.
You do not have to worry regarding waiting for results to start treatment. Waiting for confirmation of results for few days will not cause any complications.
Follow-up with your treating physician with the blood results for appropriate management.
Hope I was able to help you
