Brief Answer:
Sleepiness is a side effect of gabapentin

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns . Gabapentin is known to cause fatigue , dizziness and sedation. That is why you feel sleepy after taking it.
Other side effects of Gabapentin include unsteadiness, clumsiness , tremors, blurred vision, peripheral edema , fever, irritability , tremors, flu like symptoms and low back pain.
You do not necessarily experience all these side effects , you may experience some or none of them.
The dose of Gabapentin for neuropathy is usually maintained at 1800 mg daily but it could be prescribed up to 3600 mg daily in some cases.
I hope I answered your question. if you don't have any other clarifications then please close the discussion.

Is this drug an opioid or habit forming? What may be a substitute?

Brief Answer:
Not an opiate

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, Gabapentin does not contain opiates but still it can cause physical dependence. This means that your body gets accustomed to taking it and that you will experience withdrawal symptoms of you suddenly stop it.
if you plan to stop it you will need to slowly tapper the dose down.
A substitute to Gabapentin can be pregabalin ( lyrica ) but it is not expensive . it also causes drowsiness and weight gain.
I hope I answered your question . if you don't have any other clarifications then please close the discussion.
