Intermittent Bleeding And Split Labia After Childbirth. Is This Normal?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Apr 2013
Question: I am 8 weeks post partum and exclusively breastfeeding. I had a 4 week chec-up not a 6 week for reasons unknown to me, which I found unusual. I stopped bleeding at 6 weeks. But now at 8 weeks I am bleeding bright red loos and cramping. I had to use two pads (the huge thick pads for heavy flow). When I go to restroom the blood is dripping out into toilet. I called OBGYN and he said to take 2 progestrine only BC pills today, tomorrow and one a day thereafter. I truly do not trust this Dr. The same Dr. Who scheduled me for a 4 week check up and did a vaginal exam with his fingers and told me everything was okay, yet when I went home I noticed a ball of tissue just at the entrance inside my vaginal canal. Called him and he said it was normal. I didn't have this before giving birth so I am not sure he is giving sound advice. Also, when giving birth my right labia split in half, how not sure but even with stitches, to this day it's still split in two! Please help, I'm really concerned.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on health care magic.

Your history of traumatic vaginal delivery suggests extensive stitches even on labia.
There are two possibilities for you to have fresh bleeding from vagina at 8 weeks.
One is secondary infection at the site of stitches.
second is low platelet count leading to bleeding and clotting problem.
Get your platelet count done.
I suggest you to get yourself examined by a specialist Gynecologist for the cause of bleeding.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask if you have more doubts. I will be happy to help.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.

Vaginal delivery causes tear of vaginal mucosa as well. Stitches need to ta be taken in the vaginal canal as well to stop bleeding. Secondary infection causes bleeding which you can see coming out through vagina.
There could be added platelet deficiency as well.
You need to visit your Gynecologist at the earliest.
There is nothing to worry as this is very common presentation following delivery. Drugs can treat your problem completely.
Wish you early recovery.
regards,
Dr Nilofer
