Question: I was reading a usmle step medical book and had a few questions. What is meant by the development of the glans penis. Isn’t the glans penis fully developed by the age of 9-10? Is it the corona that develops during puberty? I’m not quite understanding. I was a nursing student and am looking back into either getting into nursing or medical school

Brief Answer:
Glans penis development explained below in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Development of the glans penis refers to the changes of the glans during life.

At birth, the glans of the penis is attached to an area of skin called the foreskin.

Over time, this foreskin will begin to separate from the glans, until the skin is able to fully retract.

By around the age of 2, the foreskin should start to separate naturally from the glans.

This process happens naturally in childhood or during puberty and has usually happened by the age of 18.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
