Question: I was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago with ureaplasma from an gyno that told me it was an STD. She gave me azithromycin for treatment. I did some research and saw articles saying that it is not so I decided to seek a second opinion. The second doctor told me it was not an STD, re-tested me and the ureaplasma was still present. They then prescribed me doxycycline. Im just very confused about the whole ordeal, and now I just want to know is it safe to take this second antibiotic so soon? I dont want to risk developing an immunity to the medication.

Hi,
Welcome to Ask A Doctor through Healthcare magic.
Thanks for posting your query.
First of all, you have to reveal your gender identity and tell me about your sexual activities. Married or unmarried?
Ureaplasma urealyticum is a sexually transmiited infection only. You can complete the course of antibiotics as prescribed by your physician. If you have intermittent and inadequate or drop out from treatment, then only you have to worry about the ressistance to the drugs. Otherwise nothing to worry. Doxycyclin is safe and not having much side effects.

Hi,
Welcome back.
What was the dose of Azithromycin you had been asked to take? Both Azithromycin and Doxycyclin will be effective against Ureaplasma urealyticum infection. What was the site from which specimen was taken for ureaplasma? What type of test had been done? You can upload the report in this site. What was your complaint for which you met your doctor?

It was 500mg of Azithromycin for 5 days. Both screenings were from a vaginal culture. I was suffering fro recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis which prompted the initial Ureaplasma screening. But after I finished the medicine and was retested it still was there.

Brief Answer:
May be due to inadequate dose or due to resistant strains

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
The dose for nongonococcal cervicitis (for Chlamydia and Ureaplasma and mycoplasma) is Tablet Azithromycin 1 gm as a single dose. If not responded we can give Capsule Doxycyclin 100 mg twice daily for 14- 21 days. Certain books may say for 1 week. It is better to take fore three weeks. Tab Azithromycin 500 mg daily for 5 days cannot be considered equal to that of 1 gm statum dose as the therapeutic level needed, could not be reached with 0.5 gms. Another possibility is certain strains are resistant to certain drugs.
