Question: I hit my forehead very hard against a bundle of lumber and there was a small cut and a bit of bleeding, and afterwards there was a scar from the impact. I don't have a headache and my vision and coordination seems alright but I'm not really sure if I should be concerned about intracranial bleeding. My memory seems fine but I feel just a bit off kilter. I know this is really vague information but from your experience, should I really consult a physician?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry about active bleeding based upon probable timing of event

Detailed Answer:
Good evening.
I understand your concern over the possibility of damage to your brain after the trauma to the head you received. However, I do not believe you should have any concerns or worries about ongoing damage to the brain or bleeding within the brain at this point in time.

The first bit of evidence to support this hypothesis is the style and character of your writing which shows excellent thought content which can describe as linear, logical, with evidence of insight and logical thinking. If there were any bleeding in the brain then, I would expect neurological function to be rather affected to the point where reading, writing, and the use of vocabulary and grammar to express complex ideas would be at least subtly affected.

The 2nd, and in my mind more overriding bit of information you present, is the fact that this happened in the past...at least several weeks into the past (possibly longer). You mention that you knocked your forehead, there was a laceration with some bleeding. You also mention that a scar developed from the impact. Scarring over the site of the impact would take at least weeks if not months to develop if you are using scar in the medical sense of the word.

Therefore, at this protracted time frame out from the injury, there should be no worry of intracranial or intracerebral bleeding to the point of having to see a physician on an emergency basis.

Of course, if you are concerned at the possibility that you may be somehow compromised in neurological functioning in some way then, it never hurts to seek out an examination by a NEUROLOGIST (perhaps one who specializes in brain trauma) just so that a good baseline of functioning from a cognitive point of view can be assessed and documented. That way, you would have something that could be followed through time and if there were any changes it could be assessed for any possible relationship to this incident.

If I've adequately answered your questions then, I'd greatly appreciate your CLOSING the query and saving my information for future reference for other medical questions or situations. Cheers!
