Brief Answer:
It may be due to local causes like Injury, cellulitis or DVT

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Unilateral ankle swelling is more often due to local causes like deep vein thrombosis or cellulitis.
Whereas bilateral leg swelling is usually encountered as a result of systemic diseases like Heart failure, kidney failure, severe protein deficiency etc.

Please share an image of your ankle and let me know if you have a history of local injury.
Please share a bit about your state of health and amount of physical activity ,you are engaged in a day.
Do you have any co morbid conditions like Diabetes, hypertension.

Waiting for your revert.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.

hello..

I have hypertension and high cholesterol and maybe pre diabetic. otherwise fine and never had had any issues other than bouts of gout. Do you think its that? also this medication is a new medication just prescribed and I think my swelling might have increased on my left leg since I started taking it. Last night, I didn't take the blood pressure pill and only took my gout pill. Do you think it will help?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Ankle swelling is very unlikely to be due to your BP medicine Losartan HTC.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Thanks for sharing.

It might be a symptom of gout which usually presents with pain, swelling, warmth, and redness of a joint and is due to deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint space.

Peripheral swelling and oedema are not a usual side effect of Losartan HCT if kidney functions are normal.
HCT component of the pill is Hydrochlorothiazide, a member of diuretic group of drugs which remove excess water from the body and used to treat volume overload too.

I would suggest you to continue the drugs which have been prescribed to you for gout and blood pressure.
Reduce your salt intake, give rest to the joint and keep limb elevated.
If the symptoms do not improve, see your clinician for complete evaluation, clinical examination and management.

Happy living.

Regards.

I just received lab results and they reported 136 Glucose on CMP and 7.6 Hemoglobin. The medical assistant said it is Type 2 diabetes, but I checked on line and its showing prediabetic. Also, she said that the results may not be accurate because the test was taken without fasting. IS this information correct or something to be concerned with. I have never had any issues outside of blood pressure, cholesterol, gout and being pre-diabetic. I am also in tremendous pain and am taking Advil, but I was advised to stop because it can make the situation worse. I am allergic to aspirin and was advised to take Tylenol but Im afraid that I am allergic to this too. What should I do about the pain without the risk of making things worse. And please let me know about the numbers from the lab test.

I greatly appreciate it

Detailed Answer:
Your random glucose and HbA1C are indicative of a pre diabetes and not a full blown Diabetes Mallitus disease.
It can easily be managed by dietary and life style modification and usually no drug treatment is required.
The fasting blood sugars are no doubt,of much greater clinical significance.
You can go for repeat HbA1C,Fasting Blood sugar,2 Hr postprandial Sugar and oral GTT after a gap of say 3 months.
That would clear the picture altogether.

Advil is a good choice for relief of pain.
Alternatively, you can take Paracetamol 500 mg thrice a day.
It is also a safe option and over the counter drug.
Take rest with your legs elevated, apply ice and wear support stockings.

Take medical assistance,if symptoms do not improve.
Warm Regards.
