I Have Experienced A Sudden Loss Of Taste. I Can

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2020
Question: I have experienced a sudden loss of taste. I can sense if food is spicy, sweet, or salty - but the taste itself remains bland. My sense of smell is seemingly fine. I have no other symptoms or oddities other than a very minor sniffle. I have read that Coronavirus can present with a loss of smell/taste - would this be a symptom, even though I can still smell just fine?

Brief Answer:
Be watchful for development of any other respiratory symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Loss of sense of taste might be due to multiple causes like Vitamin B12 deficiency, poor oral hygiene, medications, tooth problems etc.

It can also be due to corona and other viral infections due to a damage to the taste buds.

Loss of smell and taste have been recognised as one of the minor symptoms of Corona but fever, cough, breathlessness and myalgia are the overt and major symptoms.

Even out of the two, loss of sense of smell is more important than the loss of sense of taste because it signifies a damage to smell receptors, excess nasal mucus and decreased nasal airflow.

As per my clinical sense,a loss of sense of taste (in isolation),without being accompnied by any other respiratory symptoms is unlikely to be a Corona infection.
But be watchful for development of any other symptoms and take medical assistance as and when required.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
