Question: I have been experiencing pain and bloating feeling all around my rib cage area and is a sharp pain if I try to strain alittle.
I thought it was muscular , because I work out at gym 3 times a week, but I think its not related.
I have been taking gasx for a few weeks , but doesn't seem to help .
Do you have any idea ? Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Dyspepsia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing 'Ask a Doctor' query for your query,
As pain is associated with bloating it is very likely related to digestive problem. Very likely you are having heart burn and gastritis as pain is involving your chest also. This problem is covered under an umbrella term called dyspepsia.
I would suggest you to take over the counter drug pantoprazole 40 mg once daily with activated charcoal tablets that would help with bloating and pain. Along with it take a probiotic like vsl#3 twice daily for few days this would help to rejenuvate good bacterias in gut which would help in proper digestion.
If you are on high protein diet or taking shakes stop them for few days.
Take soft and easily digestible food like banana apple sauce toast and rice.
You would feel much better in a day or two.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks for your fast reply.
I did start a meal replacement shake this week, but I was having these issues well before that diet started.
I will curtail that shake until I see if this problem goes away.

What is Pantoprazole 40mg and probiotic vsl#3? Are there brand names for both when I go to cvs or walgreens?

I have had difficulty with a regular bowel movement lately , and maybe straining to relieve myself , has caused this soreness and aches/pain all around rib area. You think?
Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

1)It would be available as brand name Prilosec.
2) VSL#3 is a probiotic and helps in repleting good bacterial colonies in our gut and intestines. These good bacteria's help in proper digestion of food. Vsl#3 is a brand name its also available online. In case you don't get it take Econorn or any good probiotic available at Walgreens.

3)Straining means that you are having mild or moderate constipation. Bloating is also related to constipation. Constipated food is acted upon by a number of bad bacteria's in gut and cause release of toxic gases. These gases compresses the intestinal nerves and cause inflammation causing abdominal as well as chest discomfort.

I would suggest you take 10 grams of psyllium husk. It's a natural bulk-forming laxative. Soak it overnight in water and have 10 gram three times a day.
All your problems are interconnected so follow my suggestions and tell me how you feel in a week.

Eat normal food. If possible light vegetarian food for a few days.
Hopefully, you would feel much better in a few days.
Don't forget to take activated charcoal tablets.

Hope I was helpful,
Feel free to follow up.
Regards.

Hello, I woke up this morning feeling better, but as morning progressed I'm again experiencing pain all the way around lower ribcage area. If I clench or tighten up like you would if bracing for something, I get the sharp pain around the lower ribcage. Its hard to explain, but I hope I am describing when I experience this pain.
Not sure its bloating or constipation that's causing this now.
I am taking the meds you mentioned in prior answers.
Any other thoughts?
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Can be muscular very likely would like you to take any over counter anti inflammatory.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
When ever there is pain etc which involves ribs and chest primararily the doctor rules out the following things-
1)Cardiac-As you are 58 and was not at all relieved by taking medications related to digestion and acid peptic disorder i would recommend you to rule out a possible cardiac involvement-
Two tests recommended are-
Stress test- stress test is done to see if there is blockage to blood supply to heart causing pain.
2d echo- Motion of heart is seen to see any ischemia.

Is pain relieved on resting?
Can you point out site of pain by one finger or you need your fist?
Any relieving factor observed by you?
Duration of pain and how is it relieved?
2)Gastric-Acidity,gas etc.For which i have already prescribed you drugs.
3)Muscular-Very probable in your case.I would suggest you to take two doses of Ibugesic(Ibuprofen and paracetamol) and if not relieved then to go for cardiac etc.
Very likely it can be costochondritic pain or its variant.

Hope i was helpful.
Try two doses and tell me if you feel relieved or not.
