Why Have I Been Experiencing Constipation Mainly Due To Extensive International Travel And Lifestyle When I Am Diagnosed With GERD?
Recent colonoscopy revealed melonosis coloration due to use of laxatives.
I am taking Safi now which is also helping a few times a week so I am not taking Herbolax everyday. Is Safi also a Laxative? Is it ok to tak Safi 3-4 times a week?
I also have severe GERD and hence cannot get constipated at all.
Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I'm of the following opinion:
A. Safi has got:
1. Senna [which can act as a habit-forming laxative]
2. Nishotha [mild laxative]
3. Harad [also has the laxative properties], so Safi is a laxative
4. Increased frequency of urination and weight loss are reported side effects
PS. the dose is once a day with water and before breakfast.
B. since suffering from GERD, thus usually antacids are prescribed to alleviate the symptoms which have constipation as a side effect ??, so I won't recommend any single drug or medicine without first inspecting and examining, other than:
- Bland and soft diet, more of milk
- Avoid hot drinks and spicy food
- Give small, non-bulky meals more frequently [since GERD causes hiccups/ irritability]
- Head high position at night [since GERD causes regurgitation / choking]
C. For Constipation problem:
- Take old brown rice, green gram, chickpea, green vegetables, bottle gourd, water, papaya, grapes, muskmelon, raisins, dates, orange, pears, guava, apricot, honey, and milk
- Avoid newly harvested rice, black gram, peas, banana, potato, spicy/junk food, late nights, sedentary lifestyle.
. Purgation with olive oil is best and free of side effect
. Early morning: eat 10 cashew nuts and 4 raisins and drink water after coming out of bed
. Do exercise which increases the tone of abdominal muscles and stimulates peristalsis like:
. Straight leg raising
. Scissor kicks
. Sit-ups
. Walking and jogging
PS. As constipation is chronic thus consult with your primary care doctor as he will be in better condition as how to approach the symptom.
