I Have Been Dealing With Very Bad Neck Pain For

Question: I have been dealing with very bad neck pain for about 2 years now along with very intense headaches. About 6 months ago I started to have muscle spasms in my upper back followed by arm and shoulder pain on both sides. For a couple weeks I had numbness in my left bicep. I had a mri of the cervical spine and they found a small central disc herniation that is contacting my spinal cord slightly. The headaches last pretty much all day long and they are very intense and they are located in the back of my head. It seems like all of these symptoms get worse and worse throughout the day and by night time I have such a bad headache, neck pain and the muscle spasms along with the shoulder and arm pain that it feels like I can barley move. I’ve tried the chiropractor, physical therapy, muscle relaxers, and recently an epidural steroid injection in my neck. After the injection I felt great with no symptoms at all for 2 and a half weeks and now for the last week it feels like it has worn off and the symptoms are worse. Any ideas on what I should do next?? Back in Febuary I saw a spine specalist that wanted to do a cervical disc replacement. Does this sound like this is definetly where my symotoms are coming from??

Brief Answer:
Herniated disc on spine may be the cause of your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
I think the main issue causing the neck pain and muscle spasms may be related to herniated discs on the cervical neck.
The herniated discs cause nerve roots compression or radiculopathy causing you pain in muscles and spasms.
You have tried different types of medications without success and I think surgery is the only option.
Meanwhile you can continue taking robaxin and doing physical therapy.

Hope I have answered the question.
