Posted on Thu, 27 Jul 2023
Question: I am awaken on most mornings by lower left abdominal pain. Pain is usually not present when I relieve bladder during night or early morning. Pain will awaken me, I can get temporary relief by rolling to right side from my left side. The pain will subside if I get up and start my day. I may or may not have a bowel movement after being up for 30 min to an hour. I have had two diviilutus attacks in last 3 years that have been treated with antibiotics.

Brief Answer:
Colon spasms - better to rule out any pathology.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Such a pain in the left lower abdomen which awaken you on most mornings, getting temporary relief rolling to right side and subsides on getting up and starting the day can most probably be due to spasm of colon. This may be a call for passing motion and instigated by the changes that occur after an attack of diverticulitis.

Since this is not causing any other effects, it may not be alarming but it is better to get a proper evaluation, examination and may be colonoscopy and biopsy if needed to rule out any mass or so.

You may please take stool softeners and laxatives to keep stools soft. Plenty of oral fluids. Avoid the foods and beverages that you may notice over time to instigate or enhance the problems.

I hope this answers your query.

Take care.
