How To Wean Off Tramadol?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: I am trying to get off Tramaol at my doctor's request, however, I have been diagnosed with Stage III Kidney disease. This leaves me nothing to take for sever back pain. I had surgery in 08/13/2010 which was not successful. I am having trouble getting off tramadol and can't sleep. Any suggestions please? I feel like my doctor has thrown me under the bus knowing that I can't take any NSAID's and now he will not prescribe Tramaol because he says it is "the law." I went to the DEA website and called the DEA hotline, I know that the doctor is not precluded by law in giving me Tramadol, however, he can refuse to give them to me if he wishes. Please, with the symptoms of getting off Tramaol, i.e. restless leg syndrome an the fact my insides will not stay still to let me sleep. This is the 4th night. I can't stand the withdrawals and the pain. Is there a vitamin or something to help with the withdrawals. I was taking 3 x 50 mg a day on Tramadol. I am at one a day now and trying to get completely off but withdrawals are bad with nothing else to take.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

I went through your query and I can understand what you are going through. I can't understand why your doctor left denied treating you. There are certain medications which are very effective in management of Tramadol withdrawal .

Medications like Methadone or Clonidine are used by doctors for the patients with Opiod ( tramadol ) withdrawal . But again these are prescription medicines and you do need to consult your doctor or Pain specialist

Also your restless leg could be due to CKD and in that case medication like Gabapentin will give you a lot of relief.

Along with these kindly consider non pharmacological approaches like Yoga, Meditation or Acupuncture.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.
