How To Treat Penis Shrinkage?

Posted on Mon, 23 Oct 2017
Question: My husband is 73, very hard working and mostly healthy. Over the last year he has had a problem with his penis. There is no problem with erections. The problem is, it is shrinking. It's actually only about 20% the size it used to be and less than that without an erection. He only takes medicine for high cholesterol. This started shortly after he was catherized for about 3 days while recovering from double knee replacement. Is there any medical reason that can be explained? And is there anything we can do about it?

Brief Answer:
It is due to what is called as Penile Hypoxia

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the facts that you have noticed penis of your husband to be shrinking over a period of last one year which you think it to be due to catheterization that he had during and after knee replacement surgery .

I shall be happy if you can post me more details to help me in making precise comments
1) Is he diabetic?

As the age advances there is generalized reduction in oxygen saturation in erectile tissue more common in individuals with diabetes and hyper cholesterol what is called as Penile Hypoxia .This penile hypoxia causes many complex processes in walls of the arterioles in corporal tissue of penis and fibrosis of corporal erectile tissue leading to shrinking of erectile tissue and there by of the penis .

There is nothing to be worried about it as it a natural physiological process that is concomitant with advancing age and he has no problem in getting adequate hard erection .

This may happen due to injury to Cavernosal nerve fibers but it is unlikely to happen by due to catheterization which s very simple and non traumatizing procedure carried out as a routine in day to day surgical practice before any major surgical procedures .

You may try taking Tadalafil (Cialis)5 mg daily .It helps to improve the size of penis by increasing oxygen saturation in penis

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Is the cialis by prescription only? He is not diabetic. Just takes atorvastatin. He has had hernia surgery also. Thank you for the reply. How is the cavernosal nerve damaged normally?
