How To Stop Breast Feeding?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Sep 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,

We have 9 months old baby girl and baby has started solids of 3 feeds daily. For the remaining feeds, she is given 2 feeds of breast milk (extracted and kept in bottle) and 1 or 2 feeds of Enfamel.

Now my wife has to start going to office and need to take TB medicine as she was asked to stop when she was conceived. Before that she wanted to stop the breast feed.

Could you suggest a safe way to stop breast feed? Is there any medication in the market? What would be the side effects? And How long it generally takes for the breast milk to stop.

Could you please suggest ?

Regards

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
It is really easy to stop breast feed.
Nothing is needed in most cases because once she stops feeding the amount of milk will come down itself and then stops eventually.
All she needs is to -
- wear a tight bra
- avoid expressing milk as more she will take, more will be formed
- express only when breasts start paining
- if still breasts are active after 2 weeks then take one tablet of cabergoline 0.5 mg stat and nothing thereafter.
I hope she will stop secreting milk by simple measures without medicine in around 2 weeks time.
Take care.
