default
Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: What can be done to stop back spasms? I have scoliosis and have been fitted with a spine or brace. For 7 weeks it seemed to help the pain. Now, even with it on, my pain is up to a 10/10 .
I can't function. I am off on short term disb. From work. Have to return in Mrch. I am very afraid I won't be out of pain. I am a corporate flight attendant and am on my feet 16 hours a day ,
18 days per month. I am 56. I have never had pain from this scoliosis before now. It's brutel.
The pain rates up to comparing it to my labor in years past. What can I do? On flexeral , no help.
Hydrocodine makes me super sick . I have heard of XXXXXXX but Dr won't give it to me.
I am at a loss right now, unsure what to do. My inversion table is great, the pain is gone instantly
When I am on it. But can't live upside down all my life. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Get your MRI scan done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

Increase in pain in your case should not be ignored.

It may be due to change in angle between the vertebrae which enhanced your scoliotic angle.

So I advise you to get MRI scan of whole spine done and send me the report.

Try to avoid prolong standing, whenever you get a chance you should sit on chair.

You can take aceclofenac + thiocochicoside combination three times a day, pregabalin tab at night by discussing it with your doctor.

Till pain subside avoid any kind of exercise or physiotherapy.

Apply hot packs for 30 mins in morning and evening on your spine.

At last I want to say that alone painkillers in your case won't help you. You need to get MRI scan of whole spine done to know exact cause of dpasms and pain.

I hope it helps.

Thanks.

I had an MRI done in May. the Dr. Said I had herniated disks at C 5 thru 7.
But they couldn't cause any pain. He dismissed it. I have located the MRI
Imaging location and they are getting me a copy to pick up next Monday.

I feel there is more or different things happening now, as the pain has drascultly
Increased. I can't get my Family Dr to order another one. He says go to a new
Nerologist . Funny, as the ones I have spoke to won't see you unless you have
A vary current MRI, and I can't get an order for another one. I am happy to send you the results when I receive the disc. Do you want the written report or disk?
I started having tremors as of yesterday as well. The brace I have is called
Spine cor. I spoke to the ortho that fit me with it and he said everyone is different .
So, I am at this time still with pain and no help on the spasms.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Bracing is not recommended for people who have finished growth.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your response.

You can send me your previous MRI scan also.

If you are not in a state to get a new MRI, then you can simply get digital x-ray of whole spine and then send me the report because by seeing the x-rays I want to do measurements to compared on future visits to determine if the curve of your spine is getting worse.

Bracing is not recommended for people who have finished growth. If the curve is greater than 40 degrees, then surgery may be recommended.

If the curve is greater than 40 degrees, it is likely to continue to get worse by 1-2 degrees each year for the rest of the person's life. If this is not prevented, the person could eventually be at risk for heart or lung problems.

Surgery for scoliosis is advised to correct and stabilize the curve, for reducing pain, and restoring a more normal curve and appearance to the spinal column.

But if curve is less than 40 degrees then symptoms can be relieved with medications as advised previously, yoga, pool therapy.

I hope you have got your answer.

Thanks.

Dr.Singh.
