How To Rule Out Cryptic Giardia?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Nov 2015
Question: I tested positive for Giardia and didn't respond to inital treament. I did respond to Albendazole taken with metronidazole, but not fully and all my symptoms came back. I have had every GI test known, all normal, and am not positive for any parasites or bacteria. Also, I do not meet the criteria for post infectious IBS. Could I still have cryptic Giardia?

Hi

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM
Thank you for the query
I understand your concern
Usually giardia is known to respond to metronidazole, but if you still suspect that it has not been completely cured then worthwhile trying a repeat course of same or try nitazoxanide for 3 to 5 days after consulting your physician.
Also it is possible that you have a irritable stomach and have symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome though not fulfilling the criteria.
Can try treatment with fiber supplement which will help soothing it.
Get odd tests like calcium, stool examination of three days, thyroid function test etc if not done.
Hope this answers your query.
Wish you a speedy recovery.
Happy to help.
