Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

I would like to gather more information from you regarding your query

-Is the hair on your chin and upper lip, coarse and black Or is it fine and brownish?
-Do you have a lot of hair?Or is it just a few countable hair?If yes, how many?
-I would like to know whether there is any history of menstural irregularity?Acne?

Presence of coarse facial hair in a female is known as Hirsutism. In females, hirsutism/coarse facial hair can be due elevated sexual hormones(ovarian or adrenal) OR it may also be due to end organ hypersensitivity i.e the hormone levels are normal but they still have facial hairs due to hypersensitivity of the androgen receptors sites/end organs.

Any underlying hormonal abnormality if clinically suspected or even otherwise in a female with hirsutism, should be confirmed by lab test. e.g Serum Testosterone, Serum DHEAS(Dihydroepiandrostenedione sulphate), Serum LH/FSH, Serum Prolactin, Pelvic ultrasound for polycystic ovaries

Treatment of any underlying hormonal abnormality/hirsutism is by monthly hormonal pills(combination of low dose estrogen.e.g ethinyl estradiol along with a progestational agents e.g cyperoterone acetate) for 21 days of a monthly cycle, to be begun on the first day of the menstural cycle.

In addition to this you could also be started on twice daily, topical eflornithine hydrochloride cream(Elyn cream), which reversibly inhibits the metabolism of hair and slows down the hair growth rate.

However, Laser hair reduction (LHR) is a very safe and reliable way of reducing already existing coarse hairs. Apart from mild redness after the sitting which usually resolves in 1-2 hours, there are really no side effects of LHR.

Normally 6-8 sittings will give you a good hair reduction. The hair will become finer, the density will decrease and thereby greatly reduced. It is the FDA approved for hair reduction and gives long lasting results.

But it's under control as I am under medication. Also, I wanted to know if the cream which u mentioned above has any side effects ir not? Can I stop threading after using this cream? For how long should I use it? Can it be used over and around eye brows?

Brief Answer:
Elyn cream may be tried

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Fine and brown hair won't improve even with laser. Coarse and dark hair respond best to laser. Since you don't have much of coarse hair, Laser won't help much.

You may use this cream (Elyn), twice daily at the affected area. It takes 4-8 weeks to produce noticeable results. The hair metabolism is inhibited, so that it takes longer to grow. Therefore you need to thread less often, say one in 2 months.

There are practically no side effects with this cream. You have to use it as long as you want the desired results.

Yes, it can be used for the eyebrows too. The mechanism of action is to inhibit hair metabolism so that it grows at a slower pace

Can I find this cream at Chemist shop? And are the results permanent?

Brief Answer:
Elyn or Eflora

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Yes, it is available at the chemist shop. Elyn or Eflora are the two popular brands.

The results are not permanent, it retards the rate of hair growth as long as you use it.
