Brief Answer:
Can change to Saw palmetto Extract

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Finasteride is the active ingredient in the tablet. It is US FDA approved for Male Pattern Baldness.
Ideally it should be used in combination with Minoxidil for maximal benefits.
The response to Finasteride is usually evident by 3-6 months and is maximal at about 1 year. There may be further improvement in the 2nd year in most patients.
Most of the patients report reduction in hair fall, increase in thickness and density of hair.
The response is mainly evident on the front and crown of the scalp. The drug is less effective in reversing temporal recession.
Only 1-2% of patients may notice effects on libido and usually the negative effect on libido subsides on continued use.
Some patients may not want to continue finasteride because they feel that this side effect is hindering there married life. In those individuals there is an alternative in the form of Saw Palmetto Extract. The mechanism of action of Saw Palmetto Extract is the same as finasteride in arresting and reversing miniaturization however it is claimed to be free of sexual side effects of finasteride.
I would suggest that you seek another appointment with your dermatologist regarding your concern.
Your dermatologist might switch you to a preparation containing Saw Palmetto Extract.

Brief Answer:
Patterned hair loss

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Saw palmetto has the same mechanism of action as finasteride i.e inhibition of 5 alpha reductase hormone present in the hair follicles. This hormone is the main culprit behind this type of hair loss.
Therefore it is believed that saw palmetto is as effective as finasteride. However it is not yet approved.
Nevertheless, saw palmetto is commonly being prescribed by dermatologist for male pattern hair loss. I would suggest that you also discuss about this with your treating dermatologist because as of now Finasteride and Saw palmetto are the only known remedies for patterned hair loss.
Oily scalp is unlikely to be due to finasteride or minoxidil. Minoxidil rather causes dryness because it is available in an alcohol base.
You may use a ketoconazole based shampoo for oily scalp and possibly dandruff. e, Nizoral is available OTC as an antidandruff shampoo. It helps control scalp oil production because ketoconazole has a local antiandrogen action.
