default
Posted on Thu, 15 Sep 2016
Question: I am 36 years of age. This question is about carrying our a systematic detoxification of the body. I do not have any specific health issues apart from slightly increased blood sugar levels (Not diabetic) and fat deposition on the belly.
I would like to learn about safe and practical ways of carrying out detoxification of the body primarily meant to remove toxins from the body. I have been consuming alcohol 2/3 times in a week.

Brief Answer:
Ayurveda & Panchkarma Treatment

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and following means of panchkarma are beneficial for you:

1. Since the best time to detoxify the body is Spring season thus [March,April,May] is the best time when the nature itself is rejuvenating and so will the human body

2. There is/are two programmes/method of detoxification in Ayurveda;
. self detoxification [which includes diet, life style management and herbs] and
. Panchkarma [which includes procedures to be done under careful and experienced supervision]

PS. Do let me know which you want to approach since it will depend upon the type of toxin and Dosha Imbalance in your body

3. The procedure [self or under supervision] will depend whether the toxin inside your body is:

. Ama [undigestible food product due to weak digestion]: self detox is sufficient
. Amavisha [when Ama becomes chronic and goes deeper into tissue [dhatu]
. Garvisha [Environmental toxins]: both require self detox and supervision procedures

4. Since every detoxification process/procedure requires three stages:
. Poorva karma [preparation] i.e. balancing the digestive fire
. Pradhan Karma [Cleansing/Detoxification]: here it is decided whether self detoxification or panchkarma procedure is to be administered.
. Pashchat Karma [post detoxification]: i.e the time when the bosdy is clear of toxins and ready to accept Rasayana [Immunomodulators] drugs

PS. As such one requires a general Physical examination with an experienced and qualified Ayurveda Physician who will take into account the nature [Prakriti], imbalance of Dosha, and strength of Agni [digestive fire] to decide about the programme/procedure

5. As alcohol can both increase fat deposition and blood sugar level thus prior to undertake any method make sure to have complete abstinence from alcohol and the baseline investigations are normal

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back

As you have chosen self detox program thus following is/are recommended guidelines:

A. PRE DETOXIFYING PROCEDURE

1. For first 15 days follow the AMA reducing diet i.e. anything which causes/produces AMA should be discouraged [junk food, cheese, yogurt, oily/fried/raw food, refined sugar, honey, bread, environmental pollutants like non organic foods

. Do not skip breakfast  and take your lunch between 12 -1 PM which is the peak period of Pitta (responsible for digestion) and have your dinner 2 hours before sleeping. [It is advisable to eat a good breakfast and light lunch and dinner]

. Avoid overeating [when on detox program make sure to eat only 3/4th of the capacity]

. Keep a quiet and pleasant atmosphere in the dining hall. Watching TV while eating, talking, arguments, angry discussions all lead to overeating.

2. Take easily light digestible items like: lassi [butter milk],soups, organic vegetables, and fruits/spices which have detoxifying properties like papaya, apple, pineapple, pears, rice water, ginger, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, and make sure to maintain hydration [to expel the AMA from the body so hot water is ideal]

. Lifestyle Management:

.  Regularise sleep timing: 10 PM to 6 AM
. Regular exercise: i.e. Yogasana & Pranayam [breathing exercise] to clean body channels/respiratory organs from AMA along with walking in fresh air
. Daily Abhyanga [Massage] followed by  warm bath/shower is necessary

B. DETOXIFICATION PROGRAMME  [45 days] which include

. purification of bowel, blood, liver, urinary tract, [trifla [three fruit], kutki [picorrhiza kurroa],haridra [turmeric],ghritakumari [aloe vera], are proved to be beneficial/useful for detoxification [which suits best can only be possible through examination] otherwise trifla is the best

C. POST DETOXIFICATION : as the body is light, fresh and more energetic allow gradual introduction of normal routine and food into your lifestyle, and since channels [srotas] are clear now you can add Rasayan of your choice.

D. Fasting is the first and best of all medicines.Whenever possible one can fast for 24-48 hours [taking ginger tea with rice gruel] will help prevent dehydration and hunger, and as long as you feel lighter ,healthier without food, continue your fast. [fasting is used as a purification only if Panchkarma cannot be done]
