How To Cope Up With Megace Withdrawl Side Effects?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: My daughter was recently diagnosed with endometrial cancer, placed on Megace for four months. Since she is now trying to get pregnant, the doctor told her to go off of Megace. They did not tell her to wean off of it, just to stop taking it. One week later, she is having heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, anxiety, headaches, pounding pulse and hot flashes. Is this a medication she is supposed to have been weaned off from? I am worried about her. She is in tears and tells me she feels like there is something very wrong.

Brief Answer:
To take symptomwise non hormonal treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I read your query and I understand your concerns about megace and following is my reply:

1) Megace needs to be stopped if she is planning for pregnancy. Hence the advice to stop was right.

2) One more reason to stop is that it causes fetal defects if she becomes pregnant while on megace.

3) Megace can be stopped at once and need not be tapered.

4) The symptoms what she has now is probably because of withdrawal of megace and needs to treated individually and not with any hormones.

5) I understand estrogen cannot be given as she is battling endometrial cancer.

6) Therefore please see your oncologist and take treatment for each of these symptoms separately independent of any hormonal preparations. She can feel better with these treatments.

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX So, I understand that:
1. Megace does NOT need to be weaned.
2. However, withdrawal symptoms are possible with going off Megace.
3. The symptoms she is experiencing should be dealt with individually without hormones.

I have never paid for this type of advice in this manner, but I will definitely do this again. Awesome. Thank you.
