How Safe Is Susten During Pregnancy?

Question: My doctor has just asked me to continue taking susten 200 mg once per day till I deliver.I m 33 weeks pregnant.But if it prevents labor,how will I go into labor while on susten. Will stopping it cause the baby any other problems other than going into labor,what does susten do exactly apart from stopping labor.Does it keep the baby alive.

1) SUSTEN is a micronized natural progesterone supplement. It is used to support healthy pregnancy and prevent recurrent miscarriage by combating body's deficiency. It DOESN'T stop or cause problem in labor. You definitely go into labor while you are taking this medicine.

2) There are some other medicines which can stop early or premature labor. They act as uterine relaxant, but, mechanism of SUSTEN is quite different. It is also safe during pregnancy.

Thanks for follow up query.

SUSTEN is mostly needed during your first trimester or till 16 weeks to keep alive the embryo or growing fetus and for better attachment to uterine cavity.

After 36 weeks of pregnancy, SUSTEN is NOT essential as fetus will be quite mature. It can be stopped after consultation with your treating doctor if there is NO pregnancy related problem. Your baby will NOT die after stopping this medicine.

My original doctor who had prescribed susten says susten should be taken till end for placenta and my treating doctors here say it will relax the uterine contractions.So I m confused.

Micronized progesterone (like SUSTEN) decrease contractility of uterine smooth muscle to some extent and therefore, it can be stopped at 37 weeks.

However, it is NOT a strong uterine relaxant, so effect on labor will be less if you have to continue as per your doctor's recommendation.
