Question: how safe is LASIK treatment.... I am short sighted person. I am 28 year old and wearing spectacles from my age 17... at my age 17 my points in both eyes were negative 1.75D and now in both eyes my points are negative 3D. I always want to get rid of my spectacles but not sure if this LASIK treatment would help.... my worry point is even if LASIK corrects my eye power now, how it might be after let's say 10 years or when I turn 40. and why this specific question I see computer monitors for a good 60 to 80 hours in a week....

Brief Answer: LASIK will definitely help you. Detailed Answer: Hello Welcome to Health care magic Iam Dr. Dadapeer K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye. It seems from the history that you are having refractive error and wearing glasses for treatment of refractive error. You are having myopia of -3 dioptres. You want to undergo LASIK surgery to get rid of spectacles and want to know regarding LASIK. LASIK will definitely help you and you can have spectacle free life. LASIK is the most common and most popular refractive laser surgery. LASIK is a very safe procedure and it has got very good success results and minimal or no complications, hence no need to worry regarding the complications of LASIK. After LASIK also you will be able to work with computer monitor, no problems will arise of this. The only problem is once you reach 45-50 years of age you may again need spectacles for near vision as by this age presbyopia will set in. Before LASIK surgery we look for the following minimal requirements Age more than 21 years Adequate corneal thickness Stable refractive error Refractive error within the range of correction by LASIK Since you are aged 28 years now you are eligible to undergo surgery. The corneal thickness will be measured by doing orbscan and depending on this your fitness for surgery will be decided by your treating surgeon. If the corneal thickness is not adequate you can go for other refractive surgeries like phakic intraocular lens. LASIK can correct up to 10 dioptres of myopia, since your refractive error is -3 dioptre this can be easily corrected by LASIK. Hope I have answered your questions and the information is helpful to you. Thank you

Brief Answer: Mediclaim do not cover LASIK. Detailed Answer: Hello Mr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Thank you for the follow up. The cost of the LASIK depends on the type of LASIK. LASIK costs about Rs. 35,000 and customized LASIK costs about Rs. 45,000 and Intralase LASIK costs about Rs. 80,000. These are rates in India. Mediclaim procedures do not cover these LASIK surgeries as they come under cosmetic surgeries. Intralase LASIK is also called as blade less LASIK and if you can afford it is the best mode of treatment. LASIK and Customized LASIK are also equally good, the only draw back being they use a blade called as keratome. With a experienced surgeon this not cause any problems. Hence you can choose any of the sub type of LASIK, all are equally safe and effective. Hope I have answered your questions and the information is helpful to you. Thank you
