default
Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014
Question: I have been probed twice and have a chronic bladder infection. I was prescribed Bactrim DS (one per day) but have just recently come down with a UTI that is painful and can't get it under control....have had for over a week now. How many Bactrim DS can I take per day until this is brought under control ? I'm drinking lots of water and taking cranberry supplements also but have had very little relief. Also would like to no water is best OTC to take for the constant pain and discomfort.

Brief Answer: may be resistant to bactrim Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Bactrim DS is double strength bactrim. Because it is double strength, it can only be used one tablet once a day. The normal strength tablet can be used 2 tablets twice daily. These strengths are equally effective. Normally, though the course can be taken for 10 to 14 days in some persons, relief is felt by day 2 to 4. The fact that after a week there is no improvement suggests that the bacteria causing this particular infection may be resistant to bactrim. This is even more likely since you are also using increased fluids and cranberry juice. Though there are common bacteria that usually cause UTI, sometimes other bacteria can cause this infection and also the normal bacteria can develop resistance to the usual antibiotics Your doctor may consider sending off another urine sample to the lab to check for the bacteria and to determine which antibiotics would work best. He or she may change the antibiotic prior to obtaining the result to one that has a wider coverage. If the lab shows that this new antibiotics is also not a good option then it can be changed. In terms of pain management, paracetamol or advil may be helpful. I hope this helps, feel free to ask other questions
