Question: My son and wife called me about the rotavirus they think their daughter has. She started with fever -
104 Sunday night . Vomited once yesterday, won't eat ,but is drinking Gatorade and popsicles etc. Fever was gone until this evening and now has stomach cramps and diarrhea. She is 3 yrs ,3months. Is the best to keep her hydrated ,Tylenol for temp and hopefully will help cramps. How long should it take until she is better. Thanks

Brief Answer:
would need to dilute the gatorade to reduce the sugar content

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Typically most persons recover within 3 to 5 days but in some cases it can extend to 9 days..

The gatorade would help give fluid and electrolytes but would have been particularly useful when she was only vomiting. It has a high sugar content (to give athletes extra boost).
This sugar can worsen diarrhea, this is the reason that sports drinks typically have to be diluted if using them for hydration in diarrhea.

Another alternative would be pedialyte or another oral hydration product specifically for diarrhea/vomiting.

The gatorade can be used, if diluted or the pedialyte (does not require dilution).

No solids till at least 3 to 4 hours with no diarrhea, if solids are used too soon, they would aggravate the irritated colon, delay healing and lead to further diarrhea.
Probiotics would help either on their own or using yogurt with probiotics

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
