How Long Does Recovery Take After Ectropion Eyelid Surgery?
Question: I had ectropion surgery Oct 9 I was born with congential Ptosis. I'm not sure if things are healing correctly my appearance is horrible I feel like my upper lids are extra burden with holding my lower lids I look very oriental now with small vision area between lower and upper eye lid. My doctor saids everything looks good come back in 3 months. I'm not sure he did a good job maybe I just need more healing time?

Hi,
IF the doctor who operated on it is not concerned and he is happy with the outcome then you should trust him for few days at least 4 to 6 weeks from surgery. Some people take time especially elders whose tarsal plates are weak and difficult to suture. Do not move eye balls and compresses do help.
The doctor should have prescribed you topical antibiotics, is it not? Applying cold compresses to the eyelids every 15 minutes while awake will decrease bruising and swelling. Frozen peas in a plastic bag are a useful alternative. Things should improve with this. Also you should expect that your eyes may subtly change and improve over few months after surgery.
I expect improvement in two to three weeks from now.

thank you for your advice, another concern I have is the small window of eye site I now have (slits) I have never been happy with my Ptosis and now I even look worse. Prior to surgery I asked Dr. if my window site would be the same he said yes he was wrong. After more healing perhaps I should look into cosmetic surgery or other options.

I have no details about the aperture of the eye and would not comment on this. If the window of eye site does not improve you may have to consider going to an OCULOPLASTIC surgeon. But still i recommend to give it time.

Yesterday I woke up to double vision when I look to the left. Also when I walk around the double vision makes me feel dizzy I called the surgeon no response yet. I also called my eye surgeon. They said talk to your ectropion surgeon . I'm waiting to talk to surgeon. The double vision is bad and a great concern. could you give me advice on what you think.

If you are having double vision only when you look to the left that means the rectus muscles of the orbit that cause the eye ball to turn to left are weak or paralyzed. is it the nerve that supplies this muscle is problematic or not should be examined soon. I would suggest you to take immediate appointment with the ectropion surgeon. Else you can meet a Neurologist as well. If there is no appoinment available go to the hospital ER where you were operated and the ER doctor can co ordinate with the operating surgeon/Neurologist whomever is available.
This problem is reversible so do not be worried. THere are certain causes which are temporary which can paralyze the muscles. Once the cause is treated you will get the vision back.
