How Long Does It Take For Trulicity To Take Effect And Regulate Blood Sugar Levels?

Question: Hi I'm a Type 2 Diabetic, I'm a little concerned, my doctor placed me on a new medicine for diabetes, Trulicity, I took it 2 days ago, so tonight, I was feeling funny, I took my blood sugar, its 24.8, she told me it would lower my blood sugar. but its high, so I took lantus 20units my usual dose, was this wrong? or should I have taken a short acting insulin? What should I do?

Do you know how long I have to wait, what should I do? should I take short acting insulin? is it safe to do so?

I have gone carefully through your concern.
The blood sugar you reported is too high and usually we recommend a rapid acting insulin as a long acting one needs 2 hour to start its activity.
To give you suggestions regarding the doses there are some more information needed; are you overweight (your BMI)? Before strating Trulicity what doses of insulin did you do ( except of lantus 20)? Do you think there is any cause , except of starting trulicity, of the high blood sugar now? Where you after or before a meal when you checked it?
Did you check it fasting today?

Yes my BMI is 28.0. I am trying to lose weight.
Before Trulicity I was taking Janumet twice a day, and Diamicron and if bs was over 10, to take insulin 8U Humalog. (insulin was stopped because it has been making me gain weight)

Before meal it was 12.6 after meal, it climb to 15.1

Fasting blood s ugar today, Fri 9am was 18.6.

Can I keep taking the Janumet? with Trulicity? or Diamicron?

How many calories should I eat? I don't know?

I don't like Side effects of Trulicity. Do you think Trulicity is safe? I read all the side effects it doesn't seem safe..Can I stop>

Hi again,
In these conditions i would suggest; Metformine (without januvia) + trulicity +insulin (basal +nbolus if needed).. Trulicity needs some weeks to start its effect , that is why i suggest to continue with insulin for some weeks (start with the ex doses).
Regarding to side effects of Trulicity, i would say they are likely to those of januvia, for your BMi i do agree with your physician to continue with it, but metformine is very important nkt to stop.
Regarding to diet, you should consult a dietitian for an individualized one.

About insulin doses;

Hi again,
Continue with 20 Ui basal insulin and 10 ui of rapids before each meal.
Than the doses should be modified regarding to blood sugar levels, of course reducing the dose day by day when trulicity starts its action.
The calories suggestions should be made by a dietitian, after a detailed history of your daily activity as the total daily calories depend on physical activity you make, on your metabolism (after having into consideration the previous meals).
So, you should be under a dietitian control.
