How Long Does Metronidazole Take To Treat Infected Hemorrhoid?

Question: My hemorrhoid got infected and the doctor gave me metronidazole and anusol suppositories. I've taken the antibiotic for three days now 500 mg twice daily. My question is how long until it works to kill the bacteria. Doctor said it's very inflammed. It's been so painful for over a month now.

I have gone through your question and I understood your problem.

It may take 3-4 days before metronidazole acts on susceptible organism. But at times the treatment with metronidazole can be extended upto 2-3 weeks depending upon the course of infection. Did you say you will upload pics of infected hemorrhoids. Mine is internal it just doesn't feel like it's shrunk any so far on the meds. I still have painful bowel movements they do seem to be getting a little less painful. It's just so infected I just want to be sure that metronidazole is the correct treatment plan. Also the Anusol suppositories. Thank you.

Yes dont worry you are on proper and justified regime.I would further like you to follow few other conservatory measures which will help you in reducing the condition.

Warm baths (twice or thrice daily [bid/tid]);
A high-fiber diet ; adequate fluid intake;
Stool softeners;
Topical and systemic analgesics;
Proper anal hygiene; and in some cases, a short course of topical steroid cream.

Okay thank you for getting back to me. I just had one more quick question. How long until I notice improvement or know if the metronidazole is working? I've been taking it now for five days. I just hope to avoid any surgery on it. Thanks again.

In my clinic I advice patients to visit after completion of 7 days of antibiotic and then I assess the infection and the general condition then I decide wheather to continue the same antibiotic or to go for a new one.
I will advice you to consult with your surgeon after 2 more days of metronidazole.
Are you feeling relieved now after 5 days or you are still in pain???

I feel a little bit better but I still get some pain when I have to go. I feel a little itchiness too. I took two stool softeners before bed but I haven't gone yet today. Should I take two more I didn't go yesterday either. Before that was loose stools due to the antibiotic.

Yes you should take.Stool softeners can be increased periodically if you are not passing stools.Like now you took two spoons and still dint pass stools so today I advice you to take 4 teaspoons of it.Drink plenty of water. High fiber diet.And for itching you can use topical steroids as I have mentioned earlier.
