Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: my psychiatrist may require a blood drug screen from me in February for compliance issues for my meds he prescribes: 30 mg Adderall xr once a day, 2 mg clonazepam at bedtime, risperidone at bedtime and 150 mg of trazodone at bedtime. I need details about how a blood test works...how far back can a routine test go. oh, they will test for street drugs too, but I don't do any. I sometimes don't take all my meds as prescribed and I was wondering just what such a test would detect. does it test for alcohol use as well? please help...

Brief Answer:
7 or 10 panel drug test.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns.

Usually 7 or 10 panel drug test will be instituted to determine the use of prescription or street drugs.

A standard 10 panel drug urine test typically looks for cocaine, marijuana, PCP, amphetamines (includes Adderall), opiates, benzodiazepines (includes Clonazepam), barbiturates, methadone, propoxyphene, & Quaaludes.

It usually does not tests for alcohol.

The duration of drug testing usually depends on half life of drug.

In your case, Clonazepam can be detected upto 7 days after last intake of drug and Adderall can be easily detected upto 3 days after last intake, in drug screen.

So, if you miss your adderall by more than three days before day of test, you will test negative.

Hope your queries are answered satisfactorily.

Feel free to ask further if you have more doubts.

Take care.

Brief Answer:
Toxicology screen.

Detailed Answer:
So sorry about that.

I mentioned about the urine test as it is usually more reliable and easier to perform.

Toxicology screen with a blood sample can detect alcohol, benzodiazepines, amphetamines and many other street drugs.

Alcohol is usually detected upto 10 hours, adderall upto 48-72 hours and Clonazepam upto 4-6 weeks after last intake.

So, you would have to be regular with your drugs within this period at least.

Hope this answers your query.
Thanks.
