Brief Answer:
Blood sugar measured 2 hours after meal gives accurate diabetes control

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Blood sugar can be measured at different times depending on whether you want to know the fasting, peak and diabetes control status.

2. In your case, I suppose that you are trying to know the diabetic control of sugar level after a meal. For this reading, taking blood sugar 2 hours after eating is recommended. The value of blood sugar approximately 2 hours after a meal shows the the control status.

3. Taking a reading at 1 hour after meal will show the peak blood sugar and this is high for every one.

4. The blood sugar measured by a machine might have an error of 5 to 10 percent. This is present in most machines and your actual blood sugar reading might be 5 to 10 values above or below the reading.

5. There is a target blood sugar for people as per age. In those 59 years and younger the target value is between 80 and 120 mg/ dL and in people above 60 years the target value is between 100 and 140 mg/ dL when measured 2 hours after eating.

6. However a slightly higher blood sugar level between 140 and 180 mg/ dL measured at 2 hours after eating might be considered acceptable in elderly patients.

7. To know the most accurate blood sugar control value it is suggested to do glycosylated hemoglobin test HbA1c and this will give the average blood sugar control in the last 3 months. This does not depend on meal timings and might be done once in 3 months for people with diabetes.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
