How Is HIV Transmitted?

Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: sir before 1 week I bought a candid-B lotion from market. After coming home I saw that it's seal is broken and perhaps it has been used before. So I didn't use it. But I came to know that my father is using it on his wounds due to infection(perhaps fungal infection). Sir I am afraid if someone used it before who may be HIV positive and can HIV live around the face of that medicine bottle (because the face of the bottle remains closed and doesn't come in touch to outside environment). Is is possible that HIV can spread in this way ? Please help me sir. I am feeling guilty that why I have not thrown that medicine and he used it. Please help me ...

Brief Answer:
HIV cannot be transmitted by medicine bottles

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Its unlikely that the medicine lotion might have transmitted HIV to your father. HIV cannot be found around the face of a medicine bottle as you describe it. AIDS is transmitted by close contact with bodily fluids and secretions. It can not be transmitted by casual contact such as touching bottles. Since its discovery in 1983, no new modes of transmission of HIV have been discovered. HIV cannot be transmitted by touch, by insect vectors, or by touching objects like medicine bottles.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Transmission of HIV is unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

For transmission of HIV following criteria have to be satisfied:
1. first person must be HIV positive.
2. first person must have a cut which is bleeding.
3. the blood should be on the container in adequate amount and for within a fixed time period.
4. the second person must be in close contact with the blood and must also have a cut.

These above steps are difficult to conceptualize in your fathers case and therefore transmission of HIV is unlikely.

Hope your query is answered.
